Amber goes live with Gentrack’s g2.0 to drive scalable global expansion

Melbourne, 21 May – Gentrack (NZX/ASX: GTK) and Amber Electric are pleased to announce that Amber has successfully gone live with Gentrack’s g2.0, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of Amber’s Australian energy retail business.

Amber is redefining the role of an energy retailer in Australia – one of the world’s most dynamic markets for residential rooftop solar, home batteries, and EV adoption. Unlike traditional retailers, Amber provides customers with direct access to real-time wholesale electricity prices and cutting-edge AI technologies to optimise household energy use in real-time. To support its unique model, Amber required a modern and scalable platform. By migrating to Gentrack’s g2.0 billing and customer care platform, Amber now operates on a future-ready system that supports its innovative retail model based on dynamic pricing, enabling faster time-to-market for new offerings, enhanced customer experience, and improved operational efficiency.

Amber’s wholesale energy model is now enabled by Gentrack’s Meter Data Services (MDS), which supports the calculation of complex Time-of-Use tariffs and connects directly with AEMO to ingest and process granular meter and usage data. This ensures all network-related costs – including metering, environmental, maintenance, and tariff-specific charges – are passed through to customers at wholesale rates, with Amber applying only a fixed subscription fee. Gentrack’s Data and Analytics platform provides a dedicated data pipeline, replicating relevant datasets into Amber’s environment to support its mobile application and internal analytics tools.

In February 2024, Amber and Gentrack (NZX/ASX: GTK) announced a strategic partnership, with Gentrack investing in Amber as part of a Series C funding round. By integrating Gentrack’s g2.0 platform with Amber’s SmartShift™ technology, Amber is well-positioned to scale its retail business in Australia. In parallel, the company is pursuing global expansion as a technology provider – taking SmartShift™ to international markets and helping other utilities accelerate their sustainable energy strategies with a smarter, more engaging, energy retail experience.

Chris Thompson, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Amber Electric, added:

“Upgrading to g2.0 has been a critical step in scaling Amber and delivering a better experience for our customers. It gives us the flexibility to move faster, launch new products, and support the dynamic pricing model that sets Amber apart. Legacy systems just aren’t built for this kind of innovation, but with Gentrack, we’re equipped for the future.

“The mission has always been to give our customers access to the value of renewables and smart energy technology. With Gentrack’s platform, we have the tools to expand that impact, and to keep building a better energy future as the system evolves.”

Gary Miles, CEO of Gentrack, commented:

“Gentrack’s mission is to accelerate the world towards a net-zero future by leading the global modernisation of energy retailers. Amber is a standout example of the new wave of energy retailers reshaping the future of green energy in Australia. What’s particularly exciting is the traction their technology is now getting across Europe—with new wins and a strong pipeline, it’s clear their model has global relevance.
