On air with CNA: closing the digital infrastructure gap in Singapore’s energy transition

Published: CNA (Mediacorp)

As Singapore accelerates its ambition to become a regional hub for AI and digital infrastructure, pressure on the energy system is increasing rapidly and the challenge is no longer only about adding supply.

In a national radio interview with CNA (Mediacorp), Jason Ong, General Manager Asia at Gentrack, discussed what this next phase means for Singapore’s energy ecosystem and why data, AI and demand-side intelligence are becoming as critical as generation capacity.

During the discussion, Jason shared examples from Gentrack customers Senoko Energy and PacificLight Power, highlighting how innovations such as time-of-use tariffs and SolarShare for businesses are enabling customers to play a more active role in the energy transition.

Key themes from the discussion included:

  • Utilities have shifted from collecting around six data points per customer each year to as many as 18,000 per household, enabling smarter billing, EV charging and solar integration
  • Data centres already account for approximately 7% of Singapore’s electricity demand, with significant growth expected as AI workloads scale
  • The challenge facing the sector is not only clean energy supply, but also managing peak demand from sources such as EV charging and air-conditioning
  • Real-time data, AI and system orchestration are moving from “nice to have” to essential capabilities for grid resilience and net-zero progress
  • Regional collaboration, virtual power plants and demand flexibility are likely to play a defining role in the next phase of grid modernisation

The interview highlighted the importance of modernising energy systems in ways that balance reliability, affordability and sustainability, both in Singapore and across the wider region.
