Unlocking the Philippines’ energy potential with smart tech

Published: Manila Bulletin, September 2025

Out with the old, but not quite in with the new

The Philippinesโ€™ energy sector is taking important steps toward modernising its infrastructure, but there is still progress to be made. A key challenge lies in metering, where traditional manual systems continue to dominate.

In an exclusive interview, Geoff Childs, General Manager, Asia explained why smart technology is central to building a more accurate billing system and supporting renewable energy adoption across the country.

‘Early progress in the Philippines is promising and signals the marketโ€™s readiness for smarter energy systems,’ Geoff said. ‘But smart meters alone do not deliver a meaningful return on investment.’

Power distributors such as Meralco and MORE Power are already implementing advanced metering infrastructure projects, aiming to roll out millions of smart meters in the years ahead. These programmes have the potential to transform the way utilities detect irregular consumption patterns, identify tampering and support a more flexible energy grid. However, regulatory approval remains a key step, with the Energy Regulatory Commission yet to provide a decision on smart metering rules.

As Geoff noted, smart meters are only one part of the solution. Utilities must also have the ability to process and analyse the vast amounts of real-time data generated, pairing infrastructure with advanced analytics to accelerate the Philippinesโ€™ shift to smarter, more sustainable energy systems.
